Number 1 – Training Jargon

What is the difference between Tempo running and Threshold running? What are Intervals?

Tempo and Threshold are the same thing. During this type of training you should be working at effort 7 or 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. It should be challenging and any conversation would be in ‘broken words’ If you use a heart rate monitor you will be in zone 3 or 4.

What is happening whilst training at Tempo/Threshold?

Your body ‘produces and clears’ lactate so you are running just below or at anaerobic. This means you can keep going for longer than you would for say Interval running. Typical threshold runs are between 15 and 30 minutes.

Why do threshold runs?

They are an important part of 10k and half marathon training. They teach your body to improve your lactate threshold so you can run easier (less effort) at faster paces. Threshold runs help you to simulate race conditions and improve focus and mental strength.

Next week we will look at Interval Running…….
